Gas marks are a British and Irish scale that predates accurate oven thermostats, running from a cool gas mark ¼ up to a blistering gas mark 10. Celsius and Fahrenheit are more precise, but a lot of classic British and European bread and cake recipes are still written in gas marks, so converting correctly matters more than it might seem.

Gas marks, fan ovens and the maths behind the conversion
Gas mark sits roughly on the formula (°F − 250) ÷ 25, though the scale was standardised by trial and error rather than a clean equation, which is why gas mark 4 (180°C, 356°F) and gas mark 6 (200°C, 400°F) don't line up with perfectly even Celsius steps. The calculator uses the standard published conversion table rather than the approximate formula, so figures like gas mark 7 (220°C) and gas mark 8 (230°C) match what you'll find on an oven dial.
Fan and convection ovens circulate hot air instead of leaving it still, which strips away the thin layer of cooler air that normally insulates food and slows heat transfer. The practical effect is that a fan oven cooks noticeably faster and browns more evenly at the same dial temperature, so recipes written for a conventional oven typically knock off about 20°C (or 25°F) to get the equivalent fan temperature.

Common mistakes
Applying the fan adjustment twice
Some recipes are already written specifically for a fan oven, in which case the temperature given needs no further adjustment. Check whether your recipe says ’fan’ or ’convection’ before ticking the fan oven box, or you’ll end up baking 20°C too cool.
Trusting the dial over the oven's actual temperature
Domestic ovens routinely run 10 to 20°C hotter or cooler than the number on the dial, regardless of how carefully you’ve converted it. An inexpensive oven thermometer left inside will tell you what’s really happening, and is worth more than another decimal place of conversion accuracy.
