Common ground

What they have in common

Both DoughRise and Flourwise are targeting the serious home baker who wants more than a basic recipe site. Someone who understands baker's percentages, cares about fermentation timing, and wants to improve over multiple bakes rather than just follow a recipe once.

Neither requires an account to get started. Both have a free tier. The five tools they share cover the core calculations that come up in any bread or pizza session.

Honest assessment

Where Flourwise stands out

Flourwise was built mobile-first. If you bake with your phone on the counter, the experience is genuinely good: a step-by-step timer guides you through each stage, and a baking journal lets you log notes right there in the moment rather than writing them up afterwards.

⏱️
Step-by-step guided timer
Walks you through a bake in real time. Useful if you want to follow a sequence rather than calculate everything upfront.
📒
Baking journal (free in app)
Log notes, scores, and photos per bake, all free. DoughRise's bake log requires a Pro subscription.
📱
Native Android app
Offline-capable, homescreen icon, push notifications. Better than a browser tab if you are on Android and prefer native apps.

One caveat: Flourwise is Android only. The iOS version is still in development with a waitlist. iPhone users cannot access the app features.

The DoughRise difference

Where DoughRise stands out

The five calculators Flourwise covers are a good starting point. The 13 it does not cover are where most of the interesting baking actually happens.

🍞
Fermentation science
Fermentation timing based on the Q10 temperature coefficient, not guesswork. Preferment calculator for poolish, biga, and levain at any percentage.
🥚
Enriched dough hydration
Accounts for eggs, milk, and butter so your effective hydration is accurate. The basic hydration calculator ignores these, which causes dense results.
♨️
Tangzhong & advanced techniques
Water roux ratios, lamination layer counts for croissants, autolyse timing by flour type and kitchen temperature. No equivalent elsewhere.
🤖
AI Baking Coach
No baking tool competitor has anything like it. Photo troubleshooting, personalised bake plans, climate and altitude adjustments. Coach tier only.
📱
Works on any device including iPhone
Browser-first means iOS, Android, tablet, and desktop all get the full 25 calculators with no app to download. Flourwise iOS is still a waitlist.
💰
Transparent pricing
Pro is £9.99/month, listed publicly. Flourwise premium features are available but no price is shown until you are inside the app.

The verdict

Who each is right for

Choose DoughRise if…
  • You need more than five calculators. Preferments, enriched doughs, lamination, costing, and fermentation timing are all covered.
  • You bake on an iPhone. Flourwise iOS is not available yet.
  • You want to know the price before you upgrade.
  • You want AI coaching or photo troubleshooting built into your baking tool.
  • You run a small bakery and need production costing, scheduling, and HACCP tools.
Choose Flourwise if…
  • You are on Android and prefer a native app over a browser tab.
  • The five core calculators (baker's %, hydration, yeast, DDT, unit conversion) are all you need.
  • The step-by-step guided timer matters to how you follow a recipe in the kitchen.
  • You want a free baking journal without subscribing.

Also worth knowing

Several other free baking calculators exist. sourdoughcalculator.info covers a single hydration tool. breadcalc.com offers one multi-function calculator with an integrated recipe library. breadhydrationcalculator.com covers three hydration tools. None match the breadth of DoughRise or Flourwise, but they are useful for a quick single calculation.

For a broader look at the category, the DoughRise calculator suite is open and free to try with no account required.
