Common ground

What they have in common

On pizza dough, the two overlap more than you might expect. Both work in baker's percentages, both let you set hydration, both adjust yeast automatically based on your fermentation time and temperature, and both handle preferments if you want a longer, tastier ferment. If you only ever make Neapolitan pizza, either will get you a good ball of dough.

Neither charges you to start, and neither locks the calculator behind a sign-up. The difference shows up the moment you want to bake something that is not pizza.

Honest assessment

Where Ooni stands out

If pizza is your thing, and especially if you own an Ooni oven, the Ooni app is hard to beat. It was built by a pizza oven company, and it shows. This is a genuinely excellent tool for what it sets out to do.

🍕
Multiple pizza styles, dialled in
Neapolitan, New York, Detroit and Roman presets, each with sensible defaults for hydration, proof time and yeast. A great starting point if you like to jump between styles.
🔥
Ooni Connect oven control
If you have a compatible Ooni oven, the app pairs over Bluetooth to monitor temperature in real time. Nothing in DoughRise touches the hardware side of pizza.
📱
Polished native app, free on both platforms
Available on iOS and Android at no cost, with a recipe library, saved calculations and step-by-step technique guides for stretching and launching.

The honest limit: it is a pizza app. There is no sourdough starter calculator, no enriched dough or tangzhong maths, no recipe costing. If pizza is all you make, that is not a limit at all.

The DoughRise difference

Where DoughRise stands out

DoughRise makes pizza too, but pizza is one room in a much bigger house. If you also bake sourdough, enriched loaves, or laminated pastry, or you sell what you bake, this is where the gap opens up.

🥖
Full sourdough toolkit
Starter feeding ratios, discard maths, autolyse timing by flour and kitchen temperature, and a fermentation timer built on the Q10 temperature coefficient rather than a fixed clock.
🥚
Enriched & advanced doughs
Effective hydration for eggs, milk and butter, tangzhong water-roux ratios, and lamination layer counts for croissants. None of this exists in a pizza calculator.
💰
Costing & scaling for sellers
Recipe costing with ingredients, overhead and margin, plus batch and yield scaling. Built for anyone taking bakes from the kitchen to a stall or small bakery.
🤖
AI Baking Coach
Photo troubleshooting, personalised bake plans, and climate and altitude adjustments. A conversation, not just a calculator. Coach tier.
🌐
Nothing to download
All 25 calculators run in any browser on iPhone, Android, tablet or laptop. Handy when you are following a recipe on a desktop with floury hands.

The verdict

Who each is right for

Choose DoughRise if…
  • You bake bread and sourdough as well as pizza, and want one set of tools for all of it.
  • You need starter feeding, enriched dough, tangzhong, lamination or autolyse maths.
  • You sell what you bake and need costing and batch scaling.
  • You want an AI coach that can read a photo of your crumb and tell you what went wrong.
  • You would rather work in a browser than install an app.
Choose Ooni if…
  • Pizza is your main event and you rarely bake bread.
  • You own an Ooni oven and want the dough calculator and oven control in one app.
  • You like jumping between Neapolitan, New York, Detroit and Roman presets.
  • You prefer a polished native app on your phone.
Honestly? Plenty of people use both. The Ooni app for pizza night and the Ooni oven it controls, DoughRise for the sourdough starter, the milk bread, and working out what to charge at the market stall. They are not really fighting over the same job.

Also worth knowing

If you are comparing pizza dough tools specifically, PizzApp+ is the long-standing specialist calculator worth a look. For bread-first apps, Rise is a polished iOS option. For sourdough learning and community rather than tools, The Perfect Loaf is the reference.

The DoughRise calculator suite is open and free to try with no account required, pizza calculators included.
